Trying Something New..

I never remember to update my computer! Like seriously, NEVER. I finally got sick of minimizing all the little icons that kept popping up so I caved… it is updated. So here I am with Windows Live and figured I would test out this writer thing. Who knows, maybe I will blog more now, lol!

Why Not?

Many nursing mothers find themselves in the unavoidable position of defending their decision to breastfeed. For some this comes before the 6 month mark, other it comes closer to the year and for those of us who chose to go beyond that magic 12 month mark.. well we seem to find ourselves defending our choice more often then not.
As a majority or society is very under educated on the topic of natural weaning age. World wide the natural weaning age is approximately 4 years of age, so why as Americans are we finding our decisions to breastfeed beyond a year a major topic of debate? If our defense I can come up with a few rebuttals if you will. Ways you can respond to those nosy individuals who seem to think that your child's eating habits are their business. (Because you routinely ask others what they had for breakfast right?) These responses are broken into catagories: Snarky, Educational, and Polite.

Snarky:
~ I am sorry, I was not aware that the milk from a filthy bovine was superior nourishment for my child.
~ Yep, I have been carrying these babies around for x number of years. They are going to work for ME now!
~ I will stop breastfeeding when she is full.
~ I will give my child cow's milk when they become a cow
~ How many humans have you seen suckle from a heifer?
~ Because I want my child to be smarter then yours!
~ Yes, because I am smart.
~ Because I want my children to be significantly healthier, happier, more psychologically stable and more intelligent then your children.
~ It is purely selfish thing, I like my boobs to much to get breast cancer!
~ Yes, I think we will wean sometimes before he writes his first thesis
~ We will wean before he leaves home for college I am sure.
~Of course, aren't you?
~ We will stop when her prom date is at the door to pick her up.
~ I like having the excuse to not clean my house, "I am nursing the baby, can't you do it?"
~ Why, would you like some?

.... You get the point right?

Educational:
~ Because it is the healthiest thing he eats
~ The majority of health organizations world wide recommend nursing for a minimun of 2 years!
~ It helps to prevent many types of cancer
~ It will NEVER be recalled
~ Yes, I'm still breastfeeding because I've done a lot of research on this matter and it is by far the best thing for my child, he/she will reap the benefits of breast milk long after they stop.
~ In case of a disaster it will still be available (You could add in that you would then be able to feed others of all ages to make this a snarky remark, lol)
~ Because its so important for brain growth... especially after 2

... I would continue on with this but I am sure that you already have enough facts and info to spit out that you get the point!

Polite:
~ Thank you for your concern, we are doing what we feel is best for our child.
~ Of course, he is only x months old. (and watch their faces will they do the math)
~ Why do you ask? (in the most polite voice you can muster up)

... Okay I am out on the polite responses. These are not my cup of tea! For one I think it is rude for someone to make a comment in general. If they feel the need to intrude into my personal life then they will be answered in a way I feel appropriate. If they actually seem to be interested I will move on to a more educational response. When all else fails respond with... WHY NOT?

You Know Your Little One Is Addicted to MILK OF MAMA When….

  • They ask for it constantly, and you only give in about 1 in every 5-10 times
  • You co sleep and wake up with a hand down/up your shirt holding on like they will walk away
  • They kiss your "ta-ta's" Goodnight
  • They ask each and every person if they have "ta-ta's" and if so do they have mama milk too
  • You are holding your toddler and they reach over and say "I will hold the "ta-ta's", and they do, one in each hand!
  • You have at some point in time nurse a little one while they are sitting on the potty. (Hey sometimes it hurts to poop!)
  • You get asked to put Mama Milk on a owie, and maybe just maybe on one of their friends owie's too
  • You look over and your little one is nursing a toy or stuffed animal, oh heck any object with a mouth, simply because they know how AWESOME mama milk is!
  • You have been exposed in public by a little one that first asked to nurse in a compleat sentence. When you answered not right now, they helped themselves.

LLL is not a crazy lady cult

I was at a local consignment sale this past week and had the pleasure of meeting some awesome new crunchy mama's in the area. When LLL came up I was asked a question that honestly I had never been asked before... "So do you all nurse each others babies?"

Personally I have not done this. She went on to inform me that several people she knows do not attend LLL meetings because of this. They have been told that we are basically a cult who cross nurse each others kids until they are well into elementary school. (Insert gasp here) Yes I am nursing a 26 month old, and Yes there is no end in sight for us at the moment, however this could change at any moment. We believe in child lead weaning and that is what works for us. I also would not be against nursing someone else', especially a family member's, child if the situation warranted it. If I ran into a baby that was obviously starving to death and I were producing milk I would absolutely pick up that baby and nurse it!

LLL is not a cult. It is a mother to mother support system for breastfeeding mama's. In our household we so lovingly refer to it as the "Tittie committee" (please do not take offense to this, it is just our little inside pet name) The group I belong to is an awesome group of laid back ladies just coming together over a common bond... To provide the most natural and wonderful start to our little one's life's in the best way we know how. We do not all cloth diaper, home school, no vax, co sleep, ect... We pick and choose what fits into our particular life style.

So if you are curious, check it out. Go here to find a local meeting and mosey on over to a tittie committee near you!

Welcome All

Welcome to Milk Of Mama! Let me take a minute to introduce myself. I am Mama, mother to two little piglets, one of which is still nursing at 26 months. As a mother of a nursing toddler there are daily challenges and "quirks" that often are left unsaid. This blog is a place to address and bring to light some of the truths and blessing of continuing to nurse beyond one year.
Please join me to share in this journey of self weaning, baby/toddler wearing and cloth diapering. Discussing all things "Crunchy" is a passion of mine, so please feel free to jump any time.
